Google
Google
Google
Android
Google

„This change would kill the biggest reason I use Android, because I have the freedom to sideload useful apps that aren’t available in the official store. I have never once bought an iPhone, but Apple’s comparative respect for user privacy seems preferable now, so I’ll most likely make the switch. „Raymond, change.org
„I choose to use Android as it gives me the ability to freely use my mobile phone the way I intend to. I would like to continue developing apps as a hobby without needing to be an „approved developer“ and sharing my government issued identity with Google. „Christian, change.org
„As a android user and a newbie developer, android OS is famous by the its freedom. Because we can modify our android operating system by our ways, and decided which software I wanted which I needn’t. This freedom is the biggest difference between android and IOS and other fake android, which is full of junk ads and virus-like game. However, if we lost freedom on android operating system, the open-source software developer will lose motivation from this platform. That is a horrorible things to the android and the people who beloved with it. „su, change.org

„Sadly, this is yet another corporate power grab. The intentions behind this initiative don’t make any sense (e.g. protecting users) unless you view it through the lens of corporate chokehold on user freedoms. „Android giving users choice has been the staple point of android OS. Removing choices like sideloading apps is not the move. I develop apps for myself, I do not want to be „an approved developer“ I don’t have time nor care for that. This action also is the beginning of censorship, and monopolization of android OS. Android started as an open operating system, you have simply turned it into a reskinned Apple OS. Your choice to go anti-consumer is going to hurt. You are not „protecting“ anyone „lucas, change.org
„The entire reason I switched to Android in the first place was the freedom that it allowed compared to Apple products. I felt stifled and restricted by Apple software and moved to Android with the hope that I would have more freedoms, despite some other downsides that existed at the time compared to Apple, such as camera quality. Without the freedom to install what I want when I want, what’s the point in even continuing with Android? The core reason I switched would be taken away, and there would be no reason at all for me to continue using Android products. Being able to sideload apps and have more control over how I use my device has been incredible, and I do not want to lose that. And my god I do not want to have to switch to a new device brand because of this, but I will if this is pushed through. „Cortney, change.org
„If it were only Google Pixel devices with such a restriction I would have been somewhat okay. However, going after any official Android device just shows Google’s attitude towards the community as well as the monopoly it has over an OS that many people outside of Google have contributed to. Imagine if starting tomorrow the Linux Foundation puts such a restriction on any hardware running Linux? „Aleksandar, change.org
„This is a spit in the face of open-source and Android’s userbase. „Mark, change.org
„If I want to be restricted in where I get my apps from, which ones to install and my phone to look each year the same, I buy a device with an apple on it (never did). „As an android user I love the way I want to use my phone and which app to install. Apps that are being developed my developers that are not on the play store tends to be even better than those on the play store. „what does google think’ll happen when they remove this aspect of android. this is the only distinguishable feature between ios and android „Mail-main, change.org
„I have a bunch of applications that are not on the Google Play Store that I would lose access to if this feature were to be removed. Security Concerns are not a reason to screw over your customers, and just like you and me, we’re all people too. People have the right for freedom, and you’re revoking that freedom from the devices that we bought and paid for with our own money. This is extremely monopolistic and anti-competitive. There is now essentially no competition between iOS and Android Devices if this feature gets removed. You are doing a disservice to the entire existence of Android by removing this feature. This hurts more than it helps. „C., change.org
„I signed this petition because Android’s strength has always been openness and user choice. Increasingly strict developer verification requirements risk pushing out independent and open-source developers who don’t operate as traditional businesses. Projects distributed through alternative app marketplaces like F-Droid are often volunteer-run, privacy-respecting, and community-driven. Burdensome verification rules disproportionately affect these small developers while large corporations can easily absorb the compliance costs. Security matters — but it shouldn’t come at the expense of innovation, competition, and open ecosystems. Android users deserve real choice, and independent developers deserve fair, proportionate requirements. I’m signing to support an open Android ecosystem for everyone. „Luis, change.org
„As a user and advocate of free and open-source software, I express my deep concern regarding Google’s recent decisions that progressively erode the open nature of Android. The reduction of AOSP releases from four to two times per year [[13]], the development of the system behind closed doors [[21]], and the new developer verification program that threatens independent repositories like F-Droid [[17]], represent a shift toward a more controlled and restrictive model. Android was born as a promise of freedom for manufacturers, developers, and users; turning it into a closed ecosystem not only betrays its foundational principles, but also limits innovation, competition, and users’ right to control their own devices. I demand transparency and a genuine commitment to open source. „Dalien, change.org
„Google wants to become IOS but with this petition we can have a chance for Google not to block apks and it has to work so we all have to vote „Super, change.org
„As an android user who picked android because of the principles and mission laid out by the AOSP, this is in direct violation of what the project was set out to do. Please do not do this, this hurts all consumers whether they realize it or not. „Matthew, change.org
„Installing APKs has been one of the strongest points of Android. Erasing it will lead to Android losing users, Android becoming a same-same with Apple and destroy its reputation. Think twice before making this change, it can be the start of Android’s downfall. „Lautaro, change.org
„Android meant freedom; it meant the opportunity to make the device your own even when everyone was using the same model. Android allowed the freedom of APKs, the freedom to port video games to the phone without differentiating or hiding anything from users; it allowed them to be free from blame or credits. „José Roberto, change.org
„Hello, I have been using Android my whole life, and I have always disliked iOS because of how locked down its operating system is. Recently, I have heard that Google may want to lock down Android and restrict third-party creators, and that is very concerning. Android’s openness is one of its biggest strengths. Not everyone can afford the cost and requirements to publish apps on the Google Play Store, and many independent developers rely on the ability to distribute apps outside of it. Android is also the largest operating system worldwide, and many devices such as the Meta Quest depend on Android and their own app stores. Locking down Android could create major problems for these platforms and users. As someone who plans to create and upload Android applications in the near future, this kind of change would be very limiting and would hurt creativity and development. Please keep Android open, and do not turn it into a system like iOS. Thank you for your time. „charlie, change.org
„Continue to keep our rights to open-source applications a reality for all Android users on every device and keep the option for everyone to create & install the apps they choose. „If I purchase a device, such as a smartphone, and I am not under a contract, I should be able to alter it how I want. It is MY device. There are certain features I want to disable, certain ways I want my phone to operate. With a „walled garden“ such as an Apple device, I cannot do that! That is the reason I have used Android since my first Android phone, Dell Streak 5. If Google locks things down, I’ll just switch to APPLE. What’s the point of keeping Android? „Rusty, change.org
„Android used to be the go to mobile if you wanted quality and freedom from having to buy in to one type of tech (e.g. Apple). Now they’re forcing developers and users to buy into their tracking. „I’m only using android for apk’s otherwise I would be using IOS/iPhone, Also without apk’s there would be no reason to keep updates going for certain developers, we would be losing one of the things that makes android what it is, That is my opinion on this whole idea from google „JaCureon, change.org
„People originally went to Android way back in 2008 because of the open source nature of Android. It’s what still attracts so many people to use Android. It’s what keeps people on Android. Google owes so much to the open source community, from app developers to OS developers like the CyanogenMod/LineageOS teams, the CalyxOS team, and the DivestOS team among others all the way to the people who have used XDA’s forums since the days of the HTC Dream. I realize Google wants to go into the 3rd stage of „Embrace, Enhance, Extinguish“ but that will drive more people to Linux phones. „Draken, change.org

„Android was created as an open platform. That openness made custom ROMs, alternative app stores, and independent FOSS projects possible. „Android’s intended purpose has always been to be an open, permissionless operating system. By requiring developer „verification“ to install apps, Google is turning a personal device into a corporate-controlled appliance. I oppose this policy because: Ownership: I bought the hardware; I should decide what software runs on it without a „gatekeeper.“ Privacy: Forcing independent developers to „dox“ themselves to Google kills anonymous, pro-privacy innovation. Freedom: Sideloading must remain a right, not a privilege granted by a Google-controlled ID system. Keep Android open. Don’t build a walled garden. „Jordan, change.org
„As Student and Junior Developer, I find this petition quite concerning on security and privacy for web data, android is not only a platform, it is a framework, a constant transition of metadata across the WEB. Limitating actions on android, even in level 3 is limitating not only user-friendly policy’s of privacy, but freedom on networking. I Highly Recommend Sharing this petition! „Davi Cristopher, change.org
„While, I’m not an average user of an Android device, I completely understand the need for programs to be open source and to have the freedom to do whatever you would like with the device that’s been bought by you. So to see Google attempt to censor a beloved part of Android for many users? I find myself quite outraged! It’s not exactly protection if everyone’s data is at risk of being leaked next week, and it would be all thanks to these planned restrictions! „Marielle, change.org
„This is the only reason android is better than android „David, change.org
„Protect Android FREEDOM… I’ve used Android for years because it stood for freedom and choice. But lately Google has been making it harder to install APK files apps that come from outside the Play Store. That freedom to choose what I put on my own phone is what made Android different, and it’s slowly disappearing. I’m not a developer or hacker just someone who believes that the device I bought should truly belong to me. I should be able to install safe apps from any source without being blocked or discouraged. This isn’t about breaking rules it’s about keeping control over our own technology. If Google keeps tightening these restrictions Android will lose the openness that made it great. I care because user freedom matters and I don’t want to see it taken away bit by bit. „Boris, change.org
„I do not agree with Google’s decision to limit my personal choices about the device I paid for. „Freedom to choose… With this new move by Google, that freedom is ripped away. Moves like this are things monopolies do, and Google has now proven it wants to be a monopoly. Android has been the staple of choice and open source since it’s inception and taking that away is a slap in the face to every person who chooses to customize their phone, and create an experience unique and exclusive to them. Google, stop this foolishness by not forcing users and developers hands. They should have the freedom to choose what they want, or how they develop. „Kevin, change.org

„Play Integrity, Custom ROM/Root discrimination because of that, and now this? What have you BECOME, Google? You’re not helping anyone, and I don’t even think it helps them. If I had to pick between an unmodded Galaxy S25 (or whatever the latest one is) and a modded Galaxy S10, I’m picking the S25. It doesn’t influence sales, all it does it make life harder, for everyone. Including the people imposing the restrictions, HEY, WHAT A COINCIDENCE! Just stop making the available mobile operating systems „iOS, iOS 2, and the other manufacturers’ versions of iOS 2.“ I’ve talked more about custom ROMs, but replace it with customs apps and the same point is easily carried over. And because the 2 are interconnected in nature of them both being stuff that Google might not like. „Gavin, change.org

Without this it’s just a worse version of iOS… And no one wants that. This move if not corrected will start a movement they don’t want and will grow the development of a true Linux based is for phones. This is a greed move. If this change does happen and that freedom gets taken away . Im definitely going to switch to apple as there is no reason to entertain android/google anymore . Google , take note of your communities feelings on this matter and understand the risks from an financial stand point on how negatively this will impact your sales. „Being an open platform has been one of the key defining features of Android. The ability to install and use any apps regardless of their origin is not a privilege, it is a right. By allowing one entity to say what we as users can or can not use our devices for is another link in the chain that binds and restricts all our freedoms. „Andrew, change.org
„This is a clear overreach of authority on a platform which has hitherto been a champion of freedom in the segment. This sort of restriction on the Android OS will force those of us with the desire for privacy and freedom of choice to alternative providers, or to create our own. Please re-think this decision and understand that by going this route you are furthering the creation of a world of censorship, restriction, and strife. „D, change.org

„This is a thinly veiled attempt by Alphabet towards an easier monopoly on apps and the more restrictive economy that Apple has on its own software economy. Our phones are ours, and they are computers; we should be allowed to treat them as ours and not be beholden to big tech deciding how to use our devices for us, we want to own our hardware and use it as we see fit. Give us our devices back and keep Android open! That was the entire appeal for Android dominating the market to begin with! „I’ve been an android user since I got my first smartphone a galaxy 3, I’ve been extremely happy with the amount of peronality I can add to my phone and I’ve stuck with the android platform because of it. „If I choose to install a piece of software written by someone who „isn’t verified“ on my device that is my business, not Google’s. To Google : Right now, one of the few remaining reasons I would choose an Android device over an iOS device is due to the presence of alternate app stores, like F-Droid that allow me to install open source apps. „At the age of 41 I have had the blessing of watching the smartphone grow. From its infant day’s, through to the Blackberry fad and into something I couldn’t have imagined when I had my first „brick“ cellphone. Front end center, the consumer was offered 2 brand’s in the modern era of handheld devices. The giants, Apple and Android. Google’s „open platform“ and their freedom to develop, modify and create kept me loyal my entire life in regards to ownership of said technology. It’s a great shame to hear Google is planning to end open user development, following Apple as if it’s creating massive net profit loss. If followed through, I’ll end my lifetime commitment to using Android and follow the path I swore not to follow… becoming an Apple ID number and forever locked in their digital cage. „Charles, change.org

Recently it was brought to my attention that Google is planning on violating my rights by removing the ability to install applications on devices I OWN without googles permission. This decision places ultimate power with google to suppress any speech and crush any competition which operates against their interests. As a consumer, i should have the right to install any software i choose within the boundaries of the law. The devices which i install software on belong to me, therefore, i should be the ultimate arbiter of what runs on my property. Google should not have that power. Please, i beg of you. If there are any principled people left in the US government, then please do not allow google to continue down this path. Below this point are statements which i believe accurately reflect the situation sourced from https://keepandroidopen.org/ In August 2025, Google announced that as of September 2026, it will no longer be possible to develop apps for the Android platform without first registering centrally with Google. This registration will involve: Paying a fee to Google Agreeing to Google’s Terms and Conditions Providing government identification Uploading evidence of the developer’s private signing key Listing all current and future application identifiers What this means for our rights ➤ You, the consumer, purchased your Android device believing in Google’s promise that it was an open computing platform and that you could run whatever software you choose on it. Instead, as of September 2026, they will be non-consensually pushing an update to your operating system that irrevocably blocks this right and leaves you at the mercy of their judgement over what software you are permitted to trust. ➤ You, the creator, can no longer develop an app and share it directly with your friends, family, and community without first seeking Google’s approval. The promise of Android — and a marketing advantage it has used to distinguish itself against the iPhone — has always been that it is “open”. But Google clearly feels that they have enough of a lock on the Android ecosystem, along with sufficient regulatory capture, that they can now jettison this principle with prejudice and impunity. ➤ You, the state, are ceding the rights of your citizens and your own digital sovereignty to a company with a track record of complying with the extrajudicial demands of authoritarian regimes to remove perfectly legal apps that they happen to dislike. The software that is critical to the running of your businesses and governments will be at the mercy of the opaque whims of a distant and unaccountable corporation. „Micheal, change.org

„As a android user and a newbie developer, android OS is famous by the its freedom. Because we can modify our android operating system by our ways, and decided which software I wanted which I needn’t. This freedom is the biggest difference between android and IOS and other fake android, which is full of junk ads and virus-like game.
„This is a clear overreach of authority on a platform which has hitherto been a champion of freedom in the segment. This sort of restriction on the Android OS will force those of us with the desire for privacy and freedom of choice to alternative providers, or to create our own. „This will eliminate a large number of users from the Android platform, most will leave because they are being restricted, and the others like myself will leave purely on principle. „Sadly, this is yet another corporate power grab. If I lose that ability, why would I continue to use Android over the competition? Don’t be evil. „Cameron, change.org
„Android was created as an open platform. That openness made custom ROMs, alternative app stores, and independent FOSS projects possible.
„Being an open platform has been one of the key defining features of Android. The ability to install and use any apps regardless of their origin is not a privilege, it is a right. „The APK file structure is just a file that installs a package, like an EXE on Windows or a variety of extensions for Linux executable files.

„I’m only using android for apk’s otherwise I would be using IOS/iPhone, Also without apk’s there would be no reason to keep updates going for certain developers, we would be losing one of the things that makes android what it is, That is my opinion on this whole idea from google „JaCureon, change.org
„Google is essentially deciding to kill their own identity with this move. Side loading apps is a for of freedom that is the core reason people use android. Without this it’s just a worse version of iOS… And no one wants that. This move if not corrected will start a movement they don’t want and will grow the development of a true Linux based is for phones. This is a greed move. A power move they want full control and to lock developers into their own store front. It’s sad really… A pathetic move that will hurt then in the end. I hope they change their mind.. if not I guess I will be going custom firmware on this pixel and strip Google from the device entirely. „Adam, change.org
„We should not be forced into using Google products. Our society doesn’t function without choice and competition „erik, change.org
„You, the consumer, purchased your Android device believing in Google’s promise that it was an open computing platform and that you could run whatever software you choose on it. Instead, as of September 2026, they will be non-consensually pushing an update to your operating system that irrevocably blocks this right and leaves you at the mercy of their judgement over what software you are permitted to trust. „shark, change.org
„Imagine not being able to install programs on your computer that don’t go though Microsoft or Apple first. That is where this will go next if this type of practice is made normal/succeeded. „Kyle, change.org
„The ONLY reason why i stay with android is because of the freedom. That is literally the only thing that makes android stand out compared to apple and is the reason why I stayed with android my whole life . If this change does happen and that freedom gets taken away . Im definitely going to switch to apple as there is no reason to entertain android/google anymore . Google , take note of your communities feelings on this matter and understand the risks from an financial stand point on how negatively this will impact your sales. I’m flat out saying you will lose me at least who is a loyal android and google supporter. If im willing to leave , imagine the rest of the community. „Vincenzo, change.org

„I see why this could be a potential issue if this does happen. Hopefully it doesn’t go through and it stays the same. „Gavin, change.org
„This update will ruin everything great about android „Parker, change.org
